Fear is the Mind Killer

A Lesson from Frank Hebert's Dune

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain”

- Quote From Dune by Frank Hebert

You must understand that Fear is an emotion. A mere projection of your mind. A primal mechanism in your mind that exists for survival purposes. You should conquer the fear mechanism because it will allow you to pursue your goals without hesitation, and you will become incredibly badass.

The most important thing to do when conquering your fears is to recognize them.

Take the fear of embarrassment or rejection. Other than mental discomfort, there is no way these situations can hurt you. The only reason why you dislike these outcomes is because your mind tells you they’re bad. So recognize that it doesn't make sense. If you take away any emotional effect, embarrassment and rejection are meaningless.

Therefore, you must reject the negative emotions associated with embarrassment and rejection. For instance, if you approach a person in a public setting to ask them out and they reject you, You can choose not to feel hurt. Rejection does not necessarily equal pain; it is just your mind telling you to feel hurt.

The point being made here is that your mind tells you subconsciously how to react to different situations, which you need to recognize consciously. Think to yourself, why do I need to feel embarrassed if I were to fall in public? Why do I need to feel sad if some random person rejects me? Why do I need to feel scare if someone is yelling at me? How would being scared help me in a confrontation? Once you recognize the stupidity of these fears and negative emotions, you can then choose to reject them.

Think about what you could of achieved in your life if fear did not exist. You could become someone greater and happier if you let go of unnecessary fear.

Fear is the mind-killer and the slaughter of your dreams.
