Great Conquerors: Saladin

Purpose and Chivalry

In partnership with

Saladin, Bane of the Crusader States

Hello Enlightened Samurai Readers,

I seek no glory or richness, I seek to uphold rightness!

This single line captures the mindset of Saladin, the legendary figure of the Islamic world in the 12th century.

Renowned as a formidable conqueror, Saladin is best remembered for recapturing Jerusalem from the Crusaders.

But Saladin’s greatness was not born out of ambition for power or wealth. It stemmed from his desire to combat the injustices of his time and restore balance to a fractured world.

Making him a damn fine addition to the Great Conquerors Series!

Tactical Triumph

The Battle of Hattin (1187)

Saladin’s troops encircled the Crusaders, who were suffering from heat and thirst and launched a relentless attack that broke the morale and cohesion of their forces.

Purpose

Prior to Saladin's rise to power, the Muslims were unable to repel the Crusaders from the Holy Lands due to rivalries and dissension among Middle Eastern rulers.

With Saladin’s rise to sultan of Egypt and Syria, his singular focus and purpose galvanized these factions, leading to a physical and spiritual rearmament in their efforts to defeat the Latin Christian kingdoms.

His purpose came from his devotion to the philosophy of jihad (the human struggle to promote what is right and prevent what is wrong), Saladin courted scholars and preachers, founded colleges and mosques, and commissioned them to rejuvenate this philosophy across his dominion.

By concentrating on the single, inspiring goal of jihad, he was able to channel the resources, energy, and zeal of the Muslim people toward a common cause. Saladin moved beyond rivalries, hostilities, and feuds, uniting the Muslim world against the Crusader states.

The Value

To overcome life’s difficulties and channel your complete energy effectively, you need a singleness of purpose. What is your purpose in life currently? What is that supreme goal you must achieve? Do not be distracted by minor obligations, mundane tasks, or lesser goals. Devote yourself entirely to that single purpose.

By becoming dedicated to this singular goal, much like Saladin's devotion to Jihad, you can transcend fatigue, self-doubt, laziness, and burnout.

This unwavering focus will help you emit an aura of assurance and confidence, drawing others to you just as the Islamic world was drawn to Saladin. Embrace your purpose with full commitment, and you will find the strength and resilience to achieve and conquer.

Chivalry

When King Richard the Lionheart fell ill during the siege of Acre in 1192, Saladin demonstrated remarkable chivalry by sending his personal physician, Maimonides, to treat him.

In another instance, when Richard’s horse was killed in battle and he found himself on foot facing Saladin's entire army, Saladin’s soldiers allowed him to pass through their ranks unscathed. Later, Saladin sent Richard two fresh mounts to ensure he would not be at a disadvantage.

King Richard would later proclaim that Islam has no greater or mightier prince on earth than him". Among other medieval Europeans, Saladin was also revered and respected, being viewed as an ideal king and noble soldier. Some even believed that he was a Christian in secret.

The Value
There is victory in honour. Please do not buy into the notion that victors must be Machiavellian. The most celebrated and accomplished rulers are often virtuous figures. Being chivalrous leads to admiration from both foes and friends alike. People will stand by you if you are a person of integrity and honour because you will emit a benevolent and welcoming aura.

While tricks, deceit, and deception have their place, do not let such methods consume you and become your identity. Upholding chivalry makes you an icon to be followed, worshiped, and praised. Embrace honour, and you will not only achieve victory but also earn lasting respect and admiration.

Saladin’s Empire

The Symbol of the Conqueror's Quote

Conqueror’s Quote:
I have become so great as I am because I have won men's hearts by gentleness and kindliness.- Saladin

Interpretation: Saladin attributes his greatness not to force or fear but to his ability to win people over through fatherly treatment.
